Colour Wheel

The colour wheel is a colour guide used to help you see what colours go together. If you don't know what colours to use in your painting, colouring, mosaic or any other craft activity try using a colour you haven't used before or haven't thought about using. You could also choose the colour opposite that colour on the colour wheel. For example, if you choose the colour green you would also choose the colour pink because it is opposite that colour. You could also use only one colour and use those shades of that colour.

What different colours mean:

Each colour has a different meaning for example different colours symbolise and convey different emotions.

Here is the list of different colours and what they symbolise:

  • Red - Love and hunger, whenever you see the colour red you may feel in love or suddenly hungry.

  • Yellow - Joyful, Happy and excited, whenever you see the colour yellow you will instantly feel happy and possibly excited. Yellow is also a colour of creativity, making everyone feel more creative. Have you ever wondered why creativity is good for you? Creativity is good for you because it makes you think and makes you more creative to cause or make you feel happy and wash your sadness away.

  • Blue - Sadness, loss, and calmness. Whenever you see the colour blue you will feel sad and like the whole world is made up of sadness. You will also feel bored and calm.

  • Black - Dramatic

  • Brown and grey - Dullness, The feeling of dullness is something that everybody feels and needs from time to time. Since it is dull it can make you easily think and understand what you need to do. It can also make you easily bored.

Questions:

  • Who invented colours and how did they become a part of the earth and the world?

  • Issac Newton invented the colour theory which is colours.

  • How many colours are there in the world?

  • There are 18 decillion colours in the world, with 10 million colours that humans can see. Some people can't see that many colours because of eye vision problems which limits them to seeing fewer colours.

  • How big of an impact does colour have in the world?

  • Colours make a significant impact in our world because every object is a colour for example the sky is blue, trees are green, and the colour of your skin is a colour. Even if the items are small they still have colour in them. Of course, if the object is white it is not a colour but still, there are many colours in our world. Even if we - humans cannot see every colour in the world, there is still colour. Even if you are colourblind there are some special glasses you can get so that you can see colours.

A list of keywords and terms - definitions

  • Primary colours = Red, blue and yellow

  • Primary colours = Everyone needs primary colours to paint because all the colour shades are mixed from these colours. Mixed other colours can’t make these colours.

  • Secondary Colours = Orange, green and violet

  • Secondary Colours = Colour combinations created by 2 primary colours put together. This is because red and blue are primary colours and make purple.

  • Tertiary Colours = Yellow-orange, red-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet

  • Tertiary colours = Tertiary colours are a mixture of primary and secondary colours. When you mix these two colours, you can get brown, grey and maybe even dark shades close to brown.

  • Is black and white a colour? = Black and white are not colours they are a shade. This is because lighter and darker colours and shades are combined to form them.

  • Warm and cold colours = Warm colours are red, yellow and orange, while cold colours are blue, green and purple.

  • Colour theory = Mixing colours together subject to the colour wheel (please see the colour wheel post at the top of the colours page for a detailed explanation and example of the colour wheel if you are wondering.)
